The Chaim Sheba Medical Center,
AVERAGE CAR-T COST OF TREATMENT: USD110,000
Today, CAR-T therapy in Israel is used only in the Chaim Sheba Medical Center. This is one of the few centers in the world where this treatment is applied and further researches are carried out in terms of the development of this technology. According to statistics, patients not responding to standard treatment protocols, 90% (children) and 70% (of the total number of patients) were able to achieve complete remission after applying CAR-T therapy.
Sheba is fully accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI), the recognized authority for international healthcare accreditation.
CAR-T therapy is provided complete on site at Sheba. This means patient receives all of the treatment under one roof. Sheba have its own advanced laboratory where T-cells are engineered.
Professor Yitzhak Kreis, director of Sheba Medical Center, said: "One of our goals in Sheba Medical Center is to provide patients with the most up-to-date treatment methods, and I am proud of the professionalism of our staff."
Today, blood cancer is the only indication for the use of CAR-T therapy. Leukemia is the most common malignant disease among children. Symptoms of the disease can be devastating, and conventional treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, are not always effective. Fortunately, efforts to find new and effective treatment options continue daily.
Potential patients need to undergo at least two preliminary treatments for leukemia. CAR-T requires hospitalization for at least two weeks, but often patients remain under observation for a longer period of time.
The greatest effectiveness of this treatment is noted in relation to children.
85-90% young children
Approximately 80% adolescents
About 70% patients of all ages
The treatment process is following:
Step 1: own immune cells are extracted from the patient's body
Step 2: extracted cells are modified in the laboratory by introducing a certain gene (CAR), which helps detect and destroy cancer cells
Step 3: The modified cells are reintroduced into the patient’s body where they multiply even more fortifying the immune system with the new stronger and more aggressive T-cells
Sheba Hospital continues research aimed at improving this type of therapy.
